Using Chrysin Creams And Supplements To Restore Testosterone Levels

By John Mulder

Chrysin is a natural substance found in certain plants, including the Indian trumpetflower, two classes of passion flowers and chamomile. It is also present in honeycomb and one type of mushroom, namely the Pleurotus ostreatus. When extracted from these sources it can be used in medications that treat inflammation and anxiety as well as bodybuilding supplements, fitness supplements and weightlifting supplements.

In vitro studies of this substance show it to be an anti-aromatase inhibitor, which is why individuals into bodybuilding are interested in it. In the body, aromatase converts androstenedione and testosterone to estradiol and estrone, two types of estrogen. The liver is responsible for producing aromatase while the conversion process takes place in the liver, fat tissue, and brain.

By inhibiting aromatase, the body experiences higher amounts of testosterone and lower estrogen levels. Males between 30 and 40 years of age begin to experience a decline in testosterone. To remain youthful, many men look for effective ways to increase testosterone levels and suppress estrogen production.

Many factors may be responsible for lowering testosterone levels in males. The presence of excess aromatase is just one of those factors. The enzyme increases estrogen by depleting available testosterone. This extra estrogen signals the brain to stop producing testosterone in what is known as a negative feedback loop and causes the sex hormone ratios to become unbalanced.

Elevated levels of estrogen also result in higher amounts of sex hormone binding globulin, or SHBG, in the system. SHBG readily binds to testosterone making it unavailable. The imbalance between the sex hormones leads to increased body fat and muscle loss in addition to decreased strength and energy.

Some bodybuilders will supplement with testosterone to restore the balance. This will increase muscle mass and tone while improving strength. If the imbalance is caused by excessive aromatization, inhibiting the aromatase action is a better way to achieve the desired effect.

The amount of chrysin the intestine is able to absorb is very small because it is insoluble in water. Large doses are necessary for the absorption rate to achieve the desired results. In some studies, oral administration is more effective when taken in combination with piperine but this still requires high doses. This is why many bodybuilders use chrysin cream topically instead of ingesting supplements. Creams can be effective in amounts that are one-tenth the oral dose. They bypass the liver and stomach, which minimizes gastric degradation and makes the active ingredient more effective.
